    About the program

Montenegro Dolphin Research (MDR) is the first long-term study of marine mammals in Montenegrin coastal waters. The project focuses on understanding marine mammal abundance, distribution and behaviour, identifying important habitats and investigating human impacts on the local marine wildlife.

As an intern you work alongside the research team and take part in field surveys, data collection, data processing and analysis. Throughout the week, interns join several land-based and boat-based surveys, depending on weather conditions and the research schedule. Land-based surveys are a central part of our work, allowing us to collect spatial data on dolphin positions and movements, observe their natural behaviour and record environmental conditions. Boat-based surveys complement this work through photo-identification and acoustic data collection.

Fieldwork is complemented by time spent working with the data collected during the surveys. Interns learn how to organise, process and analyse research data and can contribute to ongoing projects or start their own individual project according to their interests and level of experience. They may work with photo-identification catalogues, GIS mapping, survey data and statistical analysis, gradually developing the skills needed to contribute to the research process beyond simply collecting observations.

Interns also receive practical training in a range of methods and tools used in marine mammal research. This can include:

    • Theodolite operation and Pythagoras

    • Photo- identification

    •  Survey design

    • Acoustic monitoring and analysis of marine mammal vocalisations

    •  GIS mapping

    • Systematic data collection and analysis

    • Data management and analysis using Excel and R

    WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR

We welcome students, graduates and motivated volunteers with interest in marine mammal research, conservation and fieldwork. No previous experience in marine mammal research is required. Our Team provides training in the methods and tools used throughout the project.

For university students, MDR can also provide the opportunity to develop an individual research project during their stay. Students can work with data collected through the project and develop their own research questions in consultation with the MDR Team and their university or school supervisors. This also includes bachelor’s or master’s thesis, a university research project or other academic work.

Interns can receive guidance throughout the development of their project, including support with research design, data analysis and scientific writing. The exact scope of supervision and possibility of using MDR data should be discussed with the team before the start of the internship.

We also welcome interns who simply want to gain practical experience in marine mammal research and are generally passionate about marine wildlife. A genuine interest, willingness to learn and commitment to the project are more important to us than previous field experience.

    Typical day

Life at MDR combines fieldwork, scientific research, training and conservation activities. Our weekly schedule depends on weather conditions, the research programme and ongoing projects, so no two weeks are exactly the same.

    Typical day

Life at MDR combines fieldwork, scientific research, training and conservation activities. Our weekly schedule depends on weather conditions, the research programme and ongoing projects, so no two weeks are exactly the same.

    Fieldwork

Land-based surveys are a central part of our work and take place throughout the year. They usually last around three hours and are scheduled around sunrise or sunset. During these surveys, you will work in a small team to spot dolphins, observe their behaviour and, most importantly, collect spatial data on their positions and movements. Using binoculars, a theodolite and specialised software, you will learn how to record sightings and calculate dolphin positions. You will also document behavioural patterns, environmental conditions and the presence of marine vessels.

Boat-based surveys complement our land-based research and are conducted when weather conditions and boat availability allow. During these surveys, you may help spot dolphins, take photographs for photo-identification and collect acoustic recordings of dolphin vocalisations and human-made noise. Team members rotate between different tasks, allowing you to gain experience with different aspects of the survey process.

We also conduct kayak surveys, which provide a quieter way to approach dolphins and collect acoustic data. Without engine noise, we can get closer to the animals while minimising noise from the research platform itself. These surveys are particularly useful for acoustic data collection.

    Office work and training

When we are not conducting surveys, we work with the data collected in the field, contribute to ongoing research projects and take part in training workshops. This may include data entry, data processing and analysis, photo-identification, GIS mapping and other research methods. You will receive practical training in the equipment, software and techniques used by our team.

Depending on your interests, experience and length of stay, you may also contribute to an existing research project or develop an individual project with guidance from the team. This gives you the opportunity to explore a specific topic and gain experience beyond field data collection.

    Public Outreach

Alongside our scientific work, we aim to raise awareness of marine wildlife conservation and encourage engagement with the local community. Depending on ongoing projects and activities, you may have the opportunity to contribute to educational initiatives, citizen-science activities, beach clean-ups or other public outreach events. We welcome your ideas and encourage you to use your own skills to support these activities.

    A flexible routine

Fieldwork often takes place early in the morning or in the evening, while office work and workshops generally take place during the day. Survey frequency and working hours vary from week to week, particularly because fieldwork is weather-dependent. Interns and volunteers have two days off per week, giving them time to explore Montenegro and enjoy its coast, mountains and cultural sites.

    Free-time activities

Montenegro offers an incredible variety of landscapes and outdoor activities in a surprisingly small country. Apart from the Adriatic coast it offers rugged mountains, lakes, rivers, caves and national parks. There are countless opportunities to explore Montenegro’s beautiful nature.

Montenegro offers an incredible variety of landscapes and outdoor activities in a surprisingly small country. Apart from the Adriatic coast it offers rugged mountains, lakes, rivers, caves and national parks. There are countless opportunities to explore Montenegro’s beautiful nature.

If you enjoy spending time outdoors, Montenegro is a great place for hiking, trekking, camping and rock climbing, with scenic trails and mountain landscapes to discover. The coastal area around Tivat is perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving. During the winter months, the mountains also offer opportunities for skiing, with several ski areas reachable within a few hours from the volunteer base. Beyond its natural landscapes, Montenegro offers a rich cultural and historical heritage.
