    About the program

    Why This Project Matters

Ghana produces increasing amounts of plastic, but the recycling and separation of this plastic caste are unfortunately not a part of everyday life in many communities. A lot of the plastic ends up on streets, in nature and also in the ocean. This puts pressure on ecosystems and local communities.

With this project, the problem gets tackled where it starts by collecting the waste, turning it into new products and teaching the next generation why recycling matters.

The project combines practical recycling with environmental education. wayers has supported the project with plastic recycling machines. Volunteers help collect and process waste and turn it into useful products. At the same time, you visit local schools and work with children on creative recycling activities, so you're not only removing waste, but helping create a different mindset around it.

    Your Project

Your volunteer work takes place directly at the recycling centre at the wayers Home and in local schools. You'll get hands-on experience in waste management and recycling while helping children understand the impact of plastic on their environment.

Your typical tasks as a volunteer include:

    • Collecting plastic waste from streets and beaches
    • Sorting and preparing recyclable materials
    • Supporting the recycling process and processing collected plastic
    • Using the recycling machine to create products
    • Helping track goals such as reducing plastic waste and increasing recycling
    • Visiting local schools three days a week to teach children about recycling and environmental protection
    • Welcoming school classes to the recycling centre twice a week
    • Working with children to wash, dry and cut used plastic
    • Making school bags, pencil cases and toys from recycled plastic

Please note that tasks vary with the season and  current project needs, so not every activity can be guaranteed.

Location: Your project is based in Accra directly at the wayers Home. You'll also visit schools with the other volunteers to help the kids gain a better undrestanding of why recycling is so important.

Who You Will Be Working With

You'll work alongside the local project team, other volunteers and school kids. The local team guides you through the recycling process, shows you how to use the equipment and coordinates your school activities.

Our local team leader is Ebenezer, was born in Accra and has lived in Germany for eight years. He has extensive experience organising volunteer programmes and has volunteered himself in Ghana, Germany and the US. Together with the local team, he supports you throughout your stay and helps you settle into everyday life in Ghana.

You will not be on your own at any point, the other volunteers live with you at the wayers Home, share your everyday experiences and explore Accra and the country together with you in your free time.

    What We Expect From You

You don't need previous experience in environmental projects. What matters most is curiosity, creativity, reliability and the willingness to get involved.

You should enjoy practical work and be comfortable collecting, cleaning, sorting and processing plastic waste. When working with kids, you'll also need patience and the confidence to explain environmental topics in a simple and engaging way.

Working conditions and standards in Ghana are different from those you may be used to at home, that is part of the experience. The recycling systems and environmental awareness are still developing locally. An open, flexible, and respectful attitude will help you understand the local context and make the most of your experience.

What You Can Expect From Us

Before departure, we prepare you with an online seminar, access to the wayers Lounge, detailed travel information and the opportunity to connect with other participants before you leave. We will also support you with your visa application.

After arriving in Accra, our local team picks you up at the airport and takes you to your accommodation, the wayers Home. Your introduction includes important information about Ghanaian culture, everyday life and your project.
